Carleys Transport:?Te Kawhata?(Waikato)
Two?of the Mercedes ground spreaders at Carleys use the GS Control System. The first system replaced a failed Transpread unit in?September 2014, and another GS control?unit?replaced a?Transpread system in a?second spreader five?months later. Both units have been operating seamlessly since.
The GS Control system consists of three main components – the operator interface?(touch-screen), the control centre (CC) and the remote centre (RC). The purpose of the RC is to provide a practical wiring interface for all the coils & sensors (as well as auxiliary equipment) depending on the spreader configuration. In the case of the Carleys trucks, the previous Transpread system installed the valve block at the back of the spreader – both?RC units were mounted underneath the back wheel arches which facilitated simple connections to the existing coils & sensors.
The GS Operator Interface
The touch-screens are mounted within easy reach of the gear-levers on cabin mountings. It is very easy to adjust the exact location and orientation of the screen using the GS?screen?cabin mountings – the long?stainless steel stalk can quickly be trimmed and shaped to position the screen where it best suits the operator.?All spreading operations can be controlled with?the operator interface, but the installations at Carleys also included a gear-lever mounted button which toggles spreading on/off (up to 16 buttons can be connected?and assigned different tasks). The hardware button synchronizes with the on-screen spreading toggle button.
One of the spreaders has a TrackMap unit installed and the GS control system is integrated to automate the spreading on/off notifications; with the previous Transpread system the operator had to manually flip a switch to notify?TrackMap when spreading toggled on/off. GS offers similar or better integration (e.g. reporting spread width and left/right spreading independently) with other GPS units.
The GS Control Centre
The control centre can be mounted anywhere that is convenient – in the Carleys spreaders, both units are mounted behind the passenger seats where the integrated indicator lights are within clear view and the?on/off switch is?within easy reach. Since the control centre uses an intelligent power regulator it is not necessary to turn the unit on/off once the?spreader ignition signal has been connected – the system will turn on with the spreader and switch off once the vehicle has been switched off for one minute.
